Designing a "Complete Entry System"
If you are planning the construction of a new home, a remodel, or would like to replace your existing entry with a new complete entry system then the following information will be invaluable as you plan. This page is to help you understand some of the particular points that you must know to order and to give you some great ideas for planning your own personalized design.
Configuration

One of the most popular additions to an entry system is the side-light. Side lights can be an inumerable amount of configurations. Shown here is a door with a single side-light with a half height panel and a half height light. Shown beside this entry is a side-light with a full length light and a full length light with dividing grids or (muntins). For a more symetrical look consider double side lights with a light on each side.

If you are building a house with high ceilings the addition of a transome window above the door or above the door and side-lights can be quite spectacular.
Consider arched glass or a divided light transome to match the side-lights

After you have decided on the basic configuration of your entry system all that is left is to define a few of the technical aspects of your door such as which direction the door will swing open, jamb depths and hardware/pre-hanging. The drawing below will help us define some of these issues for your understanding.

A Door width and height
This dimension can be defined by the R.O. or rough opening (the opening left in the framing of the home to allow for the door) or can be supplied by us to your builder when the general door size is selected. Standard entry size is 3068 or 3 foot wide by 6 foot 8 inches high. B
C Jamb depth
There are some standard jamb depths that are typically forced by the framing method. If the home is framed with 6" wood stud walls your jamb depth will likely be 6 9/16" Although this dimension can change if exterior siding or interior wall finishes are "non-typical". Of course log homes, ICFs and other alternative building methods will require their own specific jamb depth.
Hanging and Entrance hardware
If you are purchasing a pre-hung door or complete entry system, we can install your hardware before shipping. Other hardware that you may need may include hinges, locksets, threshold, and weatherstripping. Additionally, double door systems may require flushbolts and dummy entrysets for the fixed door.
We offer Emtek hardware for continued reliable service and fashionable finishes that compliment Legacy Forge and Millwork Doors. We have shown some of the more popular entrysets below, but feel free to visit Emtek for more options by clicking here. -EMTEK- ![]() ![]()
